I know you came here for solid answers about the origination of the the dandelion wish, and why we make wishes on them, but the only answer I can give you is a solid "This is what I found out.."
After much research I have found little on the origination, other than the act has been taking place for thousands of years! However I have gathered alot of information on the folklore origination of our loved flower, that we can make educational guesses on the origination.
Dandelion references have been traced back 1000's of years in China, Europe and the middle east. Famous works have been written on the flower, even by Hans Christian Anderson "Frozen Originator" who wrote the "The Proud Little Apple Blossom" and the flower has had references in many other great works. It was named from French word dent-de-lion, meaning "lion's tooth". The common name dandelion is pronounced dan-di-ly-ən, but more easily interpreted and said as "Dan-de-lion.
One of the oldest folklore around is that if you blow every seed of the dandelion off while thinking of a loved one it means that they love you too. Another slight deviation to that is, when you blow on a Dandelion you are sending warm thoughts to a loved one.
It is also believed that a bride using Dandelions in her bouquet the day of her marriage will have good luck. Also believed is that if you dream about dandelions that you will have good tidings to come.
Another belief is that if a child picks the largest dandelion out of a group the variation of the size is how much thay will grow in the upcoming year!
Not really being a myth, Dandelions have also been called a "shepherd's clock", due to the fact that the flower will open at just about an hour before sunrise, and then close back up in the evening.
Dandelion have also been used in that past to predict the weather. They are a natural barometer beacuse when the weather is good they will show you their flower in its fullness, but if the weather is not so good they will ball up so to protect their gental petals!
It has also been referenced and almost assumed that due to its reputation historically for the medical uses of a dandelion, that wishes and hopes have been associated with the plant giver of better health. After that, it very well could have evolved into the good nature ability of the plant to heal and the beauty it provides, it evolved into people making wishes as the ritual today!
I hope you enjoyed our article and please check out the rest of our site, I'm sure if you love wishes and dandelions you will find something you will enjoy! I leave you know with a quote from the great St. Augustine on wishes, "Do you wish to be great, then begin by being great!"
